WASHINGTON, DC --- EmergeUSA welcomes the Obama administration’s decision to dismantle the National Security Exit-Entry Registration System (NSEERS) in its effort to protect the civil liberties of all citizens. The Department of Homeland Security’s final rule released this morning states, “The regulatory structure pertaining to NSEERS no longer provides a discernible public benefit as the program has been rendered obsolete.” The program, which was created under the Bush administration following the 9/11 attacks, has not been used since 2011 and was in talks of transforming into a Muslim-only registry under the new administration.

The NSEERS program came into effect in 2002 and targeted men and boys from 25 countries, 24 of them Muslim-majority nations. The program was initially created to detect terrorists entering the country but has failed to produce a single known terrorism conviction. The program recently caught the public’s attention during the election cycle where talks of a potential Muslim registry would go into effect led by President-Elect Trump as part of the new administration’s counter-terrorism efforts.

EmergeUSA has opposed NSEERS due to its discriminatory nature against Muslim Americans and has actively sought to secure proper representation of Muslim Americans by civically engaging Muslim communities. We believe the White House and the Department of Homeland Security did the right thing by listening and responding to the diverse voices around the nation who have been calling for the dismantlement of this registration program. The Obama Administration’s decision to dismantle NSEERS reinforces the fundamental American value of acceptance and quality for all, regardless of color, faith, nationality or immigration status.

The President-Elect continues to stand by his plans to build a Muslim registry and ban Muslims from entering the US, responding “You know my plans all along” when asked about the recent terrorist attacks in Berlin, Germany and whether he intends on carrying out his plan to build a Muslim registry. EmergeUSA will continue to remain vigilant and stand for the safety and proper representation of Muslim communities across the nation.
